The National Society of Black Engineers has announced the dates and locations for its 2015 Summer Engineering Experience for Kids program, or SEEK. Founded in 2007, SEEK is the nation’s largest summer engineering program geared toward African American pre-college students. SEEK participants engage in team-based, competitive engineering design activities and learn science, technology, engineering and math concepts under the guidance of SEEK mentors: NSBE college student members from across the U.S. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase the number of college engineering students and engineering professionals among African Americans, a community starkly underrepresented in this field. It’s very much peer-to-peer mentoring and if you are lucky enough to get invited to one, you will most likely see a marked change in yourself and […]Continue Reading... No Comments.

“Being your own boss is great. You get to choose which 18 hours of the day you work.” It was a throwaway remark made to me by an entrepreneur during an interview, but its gentle sarcasm is lost when you realise that for a lot of new business owners it reflects reality. On the one hand, entrepreneurs are told they need a healthy balance, that being ‘always on’ leads to burn out that could impact their business. On the other…is it even possible when you are starting up? Are work and life one and the same for […]Continue Reading... No Comments.

Maxx and McDonald’s announced they would increase wages for hourly workers. These pay increases may affect seasonal employees as well, particularly small businesses who are hiring seasonal workers. One of those small businesses is A Shot Above Ent Inc., a bartending and events service. Owner and CEO Lea Hatch says she does a lot of hiring in the summer to staff for weddings and other warm-weather events. “One huge challenge that we have is that the […]Continue Reading... Today we’re announcing settlements with Sprint and Verizon, who illegally billed consumers over a hundred million dollars in unauthorized third-party charges. If approved, these settlements will return $120 million directly to affected consumers. Sprint’s and Verizon’s customers became victims by clicking on ads for “free” digital content such as ring tones or daily horoscopes, and were then charged without their consent. Many people did not know that third parties could add charges to their wireless bills. The illegal billing often continued undetected for months. Sprint’s and Verizon’s billing systems invited illegal third-party charges and the companies did little or nothing to root them out. Sprint and Verizon also failed to […]Continue Reading...
