• Hiring for: Summer Discovery/Discovery Internships Counselor

    Summer Discovery/Discovery Internships Counselor Eligibility:

    • Applicants must be 21 years of age by June 18th, 2014 for all domestic programs.
    • Applicants must be 25 years of age by June 30th, 2014 for all international programs.  A proficiency in a foreign language and study abroad experience is required.  Applicants must be proficient in driving a manual transmission in order to be considered for our Cambridge University (UK) program.  (Priority goes to returning staff).
    • Applicants must hold a valid U.S. driver’s license and have a safe driving record.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Supervise, counsel, accompany, live with and be a role model for teenagers.
    • Participate actively in all program areas as assigned.
    • Must be unselfish, have a high energy level, and reflect a maturity that places the needs of the students and fellow staff members above their own.
    • Supervise student’s safety and behavior while traveling to off-campus excursions.
    • Must be responsible to reinforce, support, and follow the policies, values, rules, and regulations of Summer Discovery and Discovery Internships Programs, Inc.
    • Chaperone students daily in dorms or other accommodations.
    • Accompany students to medical facilities.
    • Counselors are on duty around the clock throughout the duration of the assigned program period.

    The following apply to ALL Resident Counselors (RCs):

    • RCs assist in the directions, supervision, and organization of a group of approximately 10-15 students, known as an “RC Group”.
    • RCs provide transportation in 7 passenger minivans  (10 passenger vans on some campuses).
    • RCs assist students with their academics. (i.e. tutoring, study groups, proofreading, etc.)
    • RCs supervise residence hall living and accompany students on excursions off campus.
    • RCs rotate working in the office, town duty, checking students into the dorm, and overseeing students each night.
    Applicants must possess the following:
    • Strong prior experience working with youth
    • Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills
    • Patience, adaptability, flexibility, and availability throughout the summer are required (must be able to attend on-campus orientation before program commences)
    • Must be emotionally mature and stable and be able to function effectively under pressure and stress
    • Proactive, with the ability to work in fast paced dynamic team based environment
    • Must possess the ability to handle confidential information and exercise good judgment
    • Must be motivated, possess a “can-do” attitude, with a high level of initiative and a strong work ethic
    • Must be able to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
